Summer is getting closer here in Jokkmokk. The snow is disappearing, the lakes are opening up, and we can already see that many of you have started booking canoes and summer tours.
One question we often get is: How difficult is it to head out on your own canoe trip?
Our simple answer is: don’t make it too complicated.
Plan short daily distances, choose an area that suits your experience, bring good food, and keep the expectations relaxed. You don’t need to know every paddle stroke or have everything figured out from the start. You learn a lot along the way. Learning by doing, simply.
Last summer, Matti made a short YouTube video about exactly this – how simple it can be to head out on your own canoe trip. The video includes a few basic tips, mixed with clips from a trip on Lake Purkijaure, 15 km west of Jokkmokk. Purkijaure is a great place for beginners, and for anyone who wants to be out for a couple of days without having to paddle long distances every day.
