A unique packraft and camping trip adventure in one of Sweden’s wildest and most beautiful places!
In individual very light rubber boats, so-called packrafts we will visit the delta of the Rapa valley, Rapadalen on the border to Sarek National Park.
We paddle in the winding canals, scouting for birds, Sarek’s great moose and other wildlife and experience just being in this wonderful landscape surrounded by its mighty mountain sides. A nature and wilderness experience that you will never forget!

Rapa Delta has today become a real hotspot in the Swedish mountains if you look at Instagram and other social media. Many of you have seen photos at the gate to Sarek National Park with Skierfe’s steep vertical slope and the small block shaped mountain Nammatj in the middle of the valley, the lush green delta landscape far below the summit of Skierfe and pictures on the large and fearless Sarek moose. Many are those who have seen these photos, but very few have or will ever have the opportunity to visit this beautiful place.

Day 1 - Arrival to Jokkmokk

In central Jokkmokk you will find the cozy Åsgård Guesthouse. Here you can check in at the earliest at 15:00 but if you arrive earlier, we can strongly recommend you to visit Ájtte, the Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum.
We all meet, guide and participants, at Åsgård Guesthouse at 5 PM for equipment check to make sure we are all ready for the following days out in the wild and distribute the common equipment such as tents and kitchen equipment. After this we enjoy a nice dinner together in Caisa’s restaurant at Åsgård.

Day 2 - Our Adventure starts

Breakfast at Åsgård then we go by car for about 1 hour to our starting point at the bridge over the river Sitoälven. Here we put on our backpacks and hike 10 km on an easy hiked gravel road to Lake Laidaure. In addition to the stuff you carry in your backpack, everyone must also carry their inflatable packraft, paddle and life jacket.
At Laidaure’s shore we will face the fantastic view towards the Rapa valley and the Gate to Sarek as it is usually called. Here we will hopefully meet AnnSofie. AnnSofie make boat transports on the lake and if it’s possible she will drive us the remaining 6 kilometers to Aktse where we will set our camp for the night.

Day 3-7 - Packrafting and wilderness life

After breakfast and that we have packed our tents, we give instructions of how packrafts work and then we start to paddle into the delta landscape. Here tracks from moose much more common than the tracks from humans. Some days we have to fight quite hard against the currents, but other days we float nice and easy with the river. It is forbidden to paddle in Sarek National Park, therefore all paddling will take place outside the National Park’s boundaries.
If weather and wind allow, we also aim to make a day trip on foot up to the summit of the mountain Nammatj. From there we get a breathtaking view over the delta.

Day 8 - Back towards the civilization

This day we will hike back all the way to the car. If we are lucky, we will be able to paddle a bit on lake Laidaure but it requires very little wind. Packrafts are not made for strong winds, large open lakes or waves. Safety always comes first, so it can be up to 16 km of hiking. However, our backpacks are lighter than at the start as almost all our food is eaten.
Back by the car we drive back to Jokkmokk where hot shower, a good dinner and comfortable beds await us at Åsgård Guesthouse.

Day 9 - Departure Day

Breakfast at the hostel before check-out and departure.

Tour conditions
There is no whitewater rafting on this tour.
Even though it is summer, you must be prepared for that temperature can drop to freezing temperatures at the same time as it can be up to +20 C during the day.
We move in an area where there is no access to cabins so the accommodation is therefore exclusively in tents. All food is prepared on outdoor camping stoves that we carry with us.
The trip is planned early and late during the summer season to try to avoid mosquitoes as best we can as they can be quite annoying in this area.

How physical demanding will it be?
You must be physically active and be able to carry all your equipment such as tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, food, etc. as well as your packraft, paddle and life jacket which gives you an additional 5 kg. Depending on the weight of your own equipment, you will carry around 20-30 kg during the first 10 km hike on day 1. After that, you don’t need to carry but instead have to paddle. Some stretches are demanding as the current presses on, while other stretches are very easy. If you are prepared to struggle a bit, most people with normal physique and arm strength can do this. We will also have nice lunch breaks, scout for game and live camp life.

For who?
The recommended minimum age is 18 years. You should be able to walk in uneven terrain with backpack without problems, be in good physical shape and without problems in your legs, back, arms and shoulders. Difficulty is medium, but remember that you must be able to carry a backpack of 20-30 kg.

Location:
We meet at Åsgård Hostel (Jokkmokks Vandrarhem) at 5 PM on day 1, arrival day.
Adress: Åsgatan 20, 962 31 Jokkmokk, SWEDEN
